Reasonable Accommodation for Religious Beliefs
When it comes to the workplace, race, sexual orientation, and religious beliefs are very sensitive topics that can cause disputes and disagreements. Employers should make sure to treat employees fairly and not judge them based on their personal beliefs, and should provide reasonable accommodation, especially in the case of religion.
Individuals should be provided reasonable accommodation for religious holidays and other legitimate requirements of their religion. If an employer discriminates against an individual because of his or her religion or refuses to allow the person to observe important religious holidays, the employee may be able to pursue an employment lawsuit against his or her employer. Understanding Religious Accommodation
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 requires employers to provide accommodation for religious beliefs, including:
- Equal treatment for employees of any religion
- Protection from discrimination on the basis of religion
- Employees cannot be prevented from observing religious activity, nor be required to participate in religious activity
- Employers should attempt to accommodate an individual’s religious expression, unless the activity would cause hardship on the employer
- Employers may not retaliate against employees for asserting their rights under the Civil Rights Act
Employers should be aware that it may also be their responsibility to reasonably prevent the discrimination and harassment of employees on the basis of religion.
