$1 million settlement reached in harassment suit

Posted on April 23rd, 2010 No Comments

Lafayette College, of Pennsylvania, has agreed to pay $1 million and provide annual training to supervisors regarding sexual harassment following a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by the U.s. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

The suit was filed on behalf of a number of women in the Easton school’s public safety department who reported being the target of lewd comments, pornographic display, and groping from a supervisor.

One employee was so intimidated and disgusted with the treatment that she quit, losing her sole source of income.

While the settlement does not undo the damage wrought by the inappropriate behavior of their supervisor, it does help assuage the mental anguish and lost wages experienced by these women. Former movie action star Steven Seagal has been charged with sexual harassment in a lawsuit filed by two former assistants.

According to court documents filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, Kayden Nguyen is suing the “Under Siege” star for $1 million dollars. The lawsuit alleges that Seagal kept two young Russian aides as sex slaves, who were on call twenty four hours a day. Nguyen, a 23 year-old former model, was hired by the 59 year-old actor as his executive assistant, but claims he abused their professional arrangement by “pushing his hands under her shirt and attempting to fondle her bare breast.”

The lawsuit also contends that Seagal carried out a more severe sexual attack on Nguyen which forced the young assistant to flee his Louisiana home. The lawsuit accuses Seagal of sexual harassment, failure to prevent sexual harassment, illegal trafficking of females for sex, retaliation, wrongful termination and false representation about employment.

Seagal’s attorney characterized the lawsuit as “a ridiculous claim by a disgruntled ex-employee who was fired.”

Black employees harassed at pipe factory

A pipe factory with Turner Industries faces a lawsuit after federal officials found that a group of black employees in Paris, Texas, was harassed with Confederate flags, nooses and death threats. Officials also found that white employees who refused to join the abuse were fired.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission required that the employees sit down with officials from the company and reach a settlement. If it takes too long, the employees would have a chance to file a civil rights suit against the company. The company said that after investigations, it found no wrongdoing at the plant. The employees’ attorneys found similar issues in the company’s other Texas plants.

NM Custodians Awarded $150K in Sexual Harassment Lawsuit

Posted on April 8th, 2010 No Comments

Officials in Dona Ana County, New Mexico have agreed to pay a $150,000 settlement to five women who claim they were sexually harassed by a supervisor while working for the county.

The five women were all custodians at the time of the violations, though only three of them still work there. According to a news release from the United States Department of Justice, which filed the lawsuit on behalf of the women, the payment accord will be divided among the plaintiffs “to compensate for their emotional suffering resulting from the harassment.”

The Justice Department filed the lawsuit in May 2008, alleging that the women were harassed between July 2005 and May 2006, by their supervisor, Johnny Gomez. The lawsuit contends that Gomez “regularly used derogatory and offensive gender-based terms to describe the women and commented about the sexual activities of the women.”

A male sheriff’s deputy has been awarded $350,000 in a lawsuit filed against Los Angeles County claiming he was sexually harassed by a male superior.

According to Los Angeles Superior Court documents, Deputy Robert Lyznick claimed he was subjected to a sexually hostile work environment, that was at it’s peak in 2007. Lyznick claimed Sgt. Charles Dery began harassing him in 2007 when he asked Lyznick if he had ever engaged in oral sex with a man and asked him to bend over for a rectal examination.

Another incident of harassment took place in a locker room in winter of 2007 when Dery slipped a finger into the deputy’s underwear and touched him explicitly.

Lyznick allegedly became so concerned for his safety, that he bought a stun gun for his wife and gave her a photo of his boss, so she would recognize him if she ever encountered him.

The plaintiff’s attorney says Dery resigned under fire in 2008, but the defense maintain that the sergeant retired.

Army Summit Discusses Sexual Harassment

Posted on April 2nd, 2010 No Comments

Military leaders met in Arlington, Virginia Thursday to discuss a better way of implementing the Army’s Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention program.

The third annual SHARP summit included three days of hearing from experts on sexual crimes. Attendees participated in work groups and briefed the deputy chief of staff of the Army for personnel, Lieutenant General Thomas P. Bostick, on how to eradicate this crime from the armed forces.

“What I ask you to do is: go and make a difference out there,” Bostick told participants at the beginning of the summit. “This is very, very important to the Army.”

Those attending the summit included a cross-section of Army officers and noncommissioned officers from throughout the country. Participants suggested ideas such as increasing strategic communication efforts and multi-media coverage on the topic, creating standardized scenario-based mandatory training, a ’standards of conduct’ contract for soldiers to sign; creating an “I. A.M. Strong” video game, and/or an “I. A.M.  Strong” cadence competition.

“The real measure of success is what you do afterward,” Bostick said at the conclusion of the summit. “We’re expecting you to lead.”
