NM Custodians Awarded $150K in Sexual Harassment Lawsuit

Posted on April 8th, 2010 No Comments

Officials in Dona Ana County, New Mexico have agreed to pay a $150,000 settlement to five women who claim they were sexually harassed by a supervisor while working for the county.

The five women were all custodians at the time of the violations, though only three of them still work there. According to a news release from the United States Department of Justice, which filed the lawsuit on behalf of the women, the payment accord will be divided among the plaintiffs “to compensate for their emotional suffering resulting from the harassment.”

The Justice Department filed the lawsuit in May 2008, alleging that the women were harassed between July 2005 and May 2006, by their supervisor, Johnny Gomez. The lawsuit contends that Gomez “regularly used derogatory and offensive gender-based terms to describe the women and commented about the sexual activities of the women.”
