The Civil Rights Act of 1964: Title VII
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was a groundbreaking piece of legislation designed to outlaw racial segregation in schools, the workplace, and other public places. Originally created to specifically aid African Americans, it has since been amended to include women and other racial minorities. Additionally, it has also been amended to specifically include protections of racial majorities, prohibiting “reverse discrimination”.
Title VII of The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination based on race in the workplace. It also prohibits both opposite-sex and same-sex sexual harassment. Additionally, it also established the creation of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
It is important to note that these statutes apply anytime that racial discrimination occurs, regardless of whether it was intentional and unintentional. For example, an employer refusing to hire employees who suffered from sickle cell anemia (a disease which primarily affects African Americans and Hispanics), would be in violation of Title VII because he is unintentionally discriminating against a racial group.
